Southern Pacific No. 1000 was initially built by the Electron-Motive Corporation in 1939 as Demonstrator No. 804. It was the fourth SW1 constructed by EMC and was sent to Oakland, California for trials by the railroad. Southern Pacific purchased the locomotive on April 1, 1939, beginning a 66-year career in various assignments throughout the State of California. This book describes the unit's operating history with four railroads and details eight paint schemes featured on the locomotive during its lifespan. Since its retirement in 2005, SP No. 1000 is preserved at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento alongside the first and last steam locomotives owned by the Southern Pacific. Read more
